SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - The trial date in the case of the man accused of gunning down a Shreveport police officer has been set for February.

Local news outlets report Grover Cannon, appeared before Caddo District Court Judge Ramona Emanuel Wednesday for arguments and hearings on four charges that include first-degree murder in the death of Thomas LaValley last August.

The proceedings culminated in the Caddo District Attorney’s office requesting a trial date of Feb. 6, which Judge Emanuel agreed to set in spite of objections from Cannon’s defense team.

An attorney from the Capital Defense Project of Southeast Louisiana argued the team is facing two other first-degree murder trials that would coincide with the February trial setting and prevent Cannon from getting the full attention needed in his case.
