SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A nurse who pleaded guilty to stealing prescription painkillers from the western Massachusetts hospital where he worked may face prison time after all.

The Recorder (https://bit.ly/1PK8L7w ) reports that prosecutors recommended three years’ probation under an agreement they reached with attorneys for Daniel Herlocker when he pleaded guilty in January to stealing drugs while working at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

A federal judge delayed sentencing until Thursday to consider whether the Brattleboro, Vermont, man should spend time behind bars to send a message of deterrence.

Prosecutors say Herlocker withdrew morphine and hydromorphone from an automated dispensing machine at the hospital in the fall of 2014, replaced the drugs with saline solution and then resealed the containers with glue.

Herlocker has apologized for his actions.
