ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York’s new state budget is investing $200 million in local projects to upgrade drinking water and waste water infrastructure around the state.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, a Bronx Democrat, says the money will go toward grants for cities and counties looking to improve their aging pipes and water plants.

Leaky pipes, busted water mains and outdated treatment plants have become a key source of concern in cash-strapped cities and towns. Estimates are that billions of dollars will be needed to ensure the state’s water infrastructure can remain operable in the future.

Officials say the money will go to help cities and counties finance projects that they couldn’t afford otherwise.

It’s included in a $156 billion state budget approved by lawmakers on Friday.
