ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - Fairfax County police say neither speed nor alcohol were involved when a police officer struck and killed a pedestrian.

Police said in a news release Sunday that 26-year-old Jeffrey Aguilar of Alexandria stepped into the path of a police car late Saturday night. Police said Sunday that the collision occurred in rainy conditions and that Aguilar was wearing dark-colored clothing.

Police say the officer had a green light and was unable to avoid striking Aguilar. He was taken to a hospital, where died a short time later.

Police say the officer is on routine administrative leave. The collision remains under investigation.
