KYLE, Texas (AP) - Authorities in the Central Texas town of Kyle say an officer fatally shot a dog that tried to attack him.

Kyle police say they received numerous calls Saturday afternoon after a dog at a vaccination clinic in a store parking lot broke loose. Police say the dog then started attacking other dogs and aggressively lunging at bystanders.

Kyle police spokeswoman Kim Hilsenbeck says the officer tried to restrain the dog, but then fired two shots after the dog tried to attack him.

She says the injured dog was taken to a veterinarian hospital where it later died.

Police Chief Jeff Barnett says officers are trained to deal with aggressive or possibly vicious dogs. Barnett says, “Based on what we know, we believe he acted in the appropriate manner.”
