SOMONAUK, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a man is dead after an Amtrak train hit a vehicle in northern Illinois.

The Somonauk Fire Department said in a statement that the vehicle was struck by the train at a crossing Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m.

The Times in Ottawa reports a preliminary investigation shows a 28-year-old man from Sandwich drove around the gates.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. He wasn’t immediately identified.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari says none of the approximately 248 passengers or a dozen crew members was hurt. He said around 8 p.m. Sunday that the train was expected to continue on its way to Emeryville, California, soon.

Two other Amtrak trains were delayed by the incident.

Somonauk is about 65 miles southwest of Chicago.
