WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) - Some people in southeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota are creating a Barn Quilt Trail in the southern Red River Valley.

Barn quilts are large pieces of wood painted to look like quilt squares and used to honor women’s contributions to agriculture.

“They’ve grown in popularity in the last few years,” Red River Barn Quilt Trail Partnership spokeswoman Mary Jo Schmid told The Daily News (https://bit.ly/1MBsgnU ).

North Dakota already has one trail of about 50 quilts in Nelson County. The Red River-area partnership hopes to have up to 20 quilts this year, building up to 100 along its trail.

The group of quilters, crafters and folk artists dedicated to celebrating rural traditions is offering $50 and $100 stipends for people who publically display barn quilts.

The proposed trail would stretch from the Wahpeton-Breckenridge area north to the communities of Abercrombie, North Dakota, and Kent, Minnesota, and west to Colfax.

“As a small business owner, anything that draws tourists to our county is near and dear to me and all the resources I have read say barn quilts draw tourists to the area,” Schmid said. “People come and want to view them and they generally need to stop for gas, or go shopping or get lunch.”
