LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - Deputies say a man participating in a triathlon has drowned in the Calcasieu River.
KATC-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1SwfQuj ) Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office says in a statement that 25-year-old Taurean K. Blake of Sulphur died Sunday.
Deputies responded to the Sam Houston State Park in Moss Bluff around 8 a.m. for a report of a possible drowning. The swimming portion of the triathlon had just begun.
Deputies say a lifeguard saw Blake swim about 75 to 100 yards and start to struggle.
Kayakers in the area were unable to rescue Blake and when deputies arrived on scene by boat, he disappeared under the water.
Officials say that Sgt. Ron Johnson went into the water after Blake and was able to locate him. Blake was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
