NEW YORK (AP) - New York City has plans to expand bilingual education programs at its public schools.
The Daily News (https://nydn.us/23a9iZM ) says 38 bilingual programs will open starting in September.
This would include 29 Dual Language classes where students would study traditional subjects in Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Polish and Spanish. English would be used on alternating days.
School Chancellor Carmen Farina tells the News that the classes are meant for both English speakers and those learning the language for the first time.
About 1,200 children across the city will be enrolled in the new programs, which will be funded with about $1 million in federal funds.
The city currently has 182 Dual Language programs in 154 schools.
