BERWICK, Pa. (AP) - A school district has canceled classes so people can attend the funeral of a football coach who won more games than any other high school coach in Pennsylvania history.
Berwick Area School District officials canceled classes Monday because they expect many staff to call off to attend the funeral of George Curry. He died Friday at age 71 after battling Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Berwick School District Superintendent Wayne Brookhart says the district wasn’t going to be able to find enough substitutes to cover for teachers attending Monday morning’s funeral.
Curry had 455 victories and coached the Berwick Bulldogs High School football team for decades.
He led the Bulldogs to six PIAA class AAA championships and was twice named USA Today’s High School Coach of the Year, in 1992 and 1995.
