PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The arrest of a 12-year-old girl at a Portland school has sparked debate about whether police should take such action against children in schools.

The girl was arrested Wednesday, more than a week after allegedly yanking another student by the hair and shoving a teacher. The assault and harassment allegations will be heard in juvenile court.

Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson says police action was necessary because the alleged victim had reported a crime.

The Oregonian reports (https://bit.ly/1otUe9S) that some community members have raised questions about the arrest. The American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon’s legal director tweeted that he was interested in speaking with the girl’s parents.

Portland Public Schools spokeswoman Christine Miles says principals typically handle student behavior problems, but parents have the right to get police involved.
