CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) - The football teams of Eastern Illinois and Indiana State haven’t played since 2009, but plan to renew one of the oldest rivalries for either school starting next year.
Eastern Illinois announced Wednesday that the nearby schools will begin a four-year run of games at Indiana State in September 2017. The teams will play again at Indiana State in 2019 and at EIU in 2018 and 2020.
EIU is in Charleston, Illinois, and Indiana State is about 50 miles southeast in Terre Haute, Indiana.
EIU athletic director Tom Michael said the renewal of the rivalry makes perfect sense.
EIU and Indiana State first played in 1901. EIU won that game 16-0 and leads the series 43-37-4.
