JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - The National Elf Refuge has ended its feeding program in anticipation of warmer weather.
The Jackson Hole News and Guide reports (https://bit.ly/1UIPLhT) feed amounts were gradually reduced over the last week as refuge staff noticed natural forage available for elk and bison.
Staff members also reported the elk were less interested and had been moving away from the feed grounds.
This year’s feed program lasted 64 days, nearly in line with a 10-year average tracked by managers at the refuge.
Refuge Manager Steve Kallin says this season’s herd survival rate improved to 99.2 percent, a remarkable number during Jackson Hole’s toughest winter months.
The refuge has also closed out its winter sleigh rides after drawing a record 29,000 riders.
