MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Former Vermont U.S. Rep. Peter Smith has a new academic post in Maryland.

On Monday, Smith, the founder of the Community College of Vermont, began serving a two-year term as the Orkand Endowed Chair and Professor of Innovative Practices in Higher Education at University of Maryland University College.

Smith, a Vermont native, helped found the Community College of Vermont in 1970. He served in the Vermont Senate and as lieutenant governor. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1988 and served one term.



He was also the founding president of California State University Monterey Bay.

In his new role, Smith will work to strengthen the delivery of learning and support services at the University of Maryland University College, which describes itself as a global leader in adult higher education
