DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) - Deputies arrested a man they say led them on a chase in eastern Iowa, resulting in a collision that injured an officer.
Delaware County Sheriff’s officials say 25-year-old Kyle Schmitt, of Sherrill, is charged with assaulting an officer, drunken driving, eluding and other traffic violations. He also faces theft and criminal mischief charges.
Authorities say the chase began Tuesday night after Schmitt was suspected of shoplifting in Manchester. He fled east in his pickup on U.S. Highway 20 and rammed a deputy’s vehicle twice.
Officials say the pickup crossed into oncoming lanes as the chase neared an intersection in Dyersville. Deputy Clayton Miller followed and his patrol car struck the pickup, which overturned.
Schmitt and Miller were treated for minor injuries.
Court records don’t list an attorney for Schmitt.
