LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police have shot and killed a man who slashed a SWAT officer during a standoff in Sylmar.
City News Service says the man died at a hospital after Wednesday’s pre-dawn shooting. His name hasn’t been released.
Police say officers went to a home Tuesday evening, following up a report that a man there might be mentally ill.
Officer Ricardo Hernandez says they found a man with a knife outside the home and jolted him with a Taser but he ran inside, starting a 7½-hour standoff.
Hernandez says tear gas finally flushed the man from the home.
He says officers opened fire after the man cut a SWAT officer on the arm during a confrontation.
