SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Salt Lake County Council has ordered a performance audit of the county recorder’s office after the recorder was discovered walking along an empty highway at night.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1TCcD1m) the council ordered the audit Tuesday amid questions about 64-year-old Gary Ott’s mental capacity. Police say he was discovered in late January wearing light clothes in frigid temperatures and speaking incoherently after his car broke down.

The Republican recorder was not available for comment, but his deputy says they aren’t concerned about the audit.

The county’s auditor says the investigation will like involve examining how personnel and resources are used.

The mayor’s office previously brought in a firm to investigate after getting a complaint from a former employee about his mental state. The firm didn’t find anything out of the ordinary.
