VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Beach City Council has approved a memorandum of understanding that reinforces the city’s commitment to a light rail extension from Norfolk to Virginia Beach.
Media outlets report the council voted 9-2 on Tuesday to sign two agreements with the state.
The first agreement, a memorandum of understanding, keeps the project on track without delays. The second starts the process of buying three rail cars for $19.77 million.
By approving the memo, the council secured $155 million in matching funds from the state.
At least 30 opponents and 22 supporters spoke before the council.
Many opponents said they believed the program will cost too much money and won’t benefit residents.
Supporters said the move would be an investment in the city’s infrastructure.
Neither the memo nor the agreement is binding.
