MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont is expanding its testing to other parts of the state for a potentially cancer causing chemical after perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, was found in southern Vermont.

PFOA has been used in making Teflon-coated products and is blamed for water contamination in several locations around the country, including in West Virginia, New York and New Hampshire.

The chemical was recently found in some private wells in North Bennington.

Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin said Wednesday that testing will be done near 11 industrial sites including near IBM in Essex; Phoenix Wire in South Hero; Champlain Cable in Colchester; Harbor Industries in Shelburne and Colchester; SuperTemp in South Burlington and Winooski; Belden Wire & Cable in Essex and Williston; Pittsford Fire Academy; and the National Guard Air Force Base in South Burlington.
