METAIRIE, La. (AP) - Two people who authorities say were banned from owning pets without permission have been arrested after nearly a dozen dogs were found emaciated at a Metairie home.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s office spokesman Col. John Fortunato tells media outlets that 37-year-old Alvin Esquilin and 54-year-old Lenjean Henry were arrested Saturday after eleven dogs were seized from the home. They both face several charges including animal cruelty.
Officials say six Presa Canario dogs were found in separate closets, along with five other dogs throughout the residence.
Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter Director Robin Beaulieu says Esquilin and Henry were banned last year from having dogs without the shelter’s approval after they were found guilty of neglect.
Some of the dogs are on the mend. Two were euthanized.
It’s unclear whether Esquilin and Henry have attorneys.
