OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - An Omaha Planning Board vote means the city may build an outdoor shooting range at the Public Safety Training Center.
The Omaha World-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1VzwiyO ) that the board approved changes Wednesday to the permit that governs use of the site. Last month the City Council changed an ordinance that barred outdoor shooting at the center, which sits on the city’s northwest side.
Officials have said the range is needed so officers can train with rifles in an outdoor environment that simulates job conditions. But several area residents balked at the idea, citing concerns about noise and safety and what they said was a city promise years ago not to allow an outdoor range at the center.
The council vote followed negotiations that led to an agreement that addressed neighborhood concerns.
