WAYNESBORO, Ga. (AP) - Students in eastern Georgia have been recognized by the state after succeeding in their efforts to have the Burke County School District become tobacco-free.
The Augusta Chronicle (https://on-ajc.com/1TDaWkh ) reports that Georgia Department of Public Health this week recognized the students for initiating the push by encouraging the school board to adopt the department’s model policy.
The new rule prohibits students, staff and visitors from smoking, chewing tobacco or using electronic cigarettes in buildings, vehicles, parking lots, or at school-related off-campus events.
Officials hope that by removing examples of adults smoking around them, children will be less likely to start smoking.
Burke joins 107 of the state’s 181 school districts in adopting the tobacco-free policy.
