NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Authorities say a Wilmington man accused of carjacking a vehicle to leave a Newark hospital has been safely returned to his bed.
New Castle County police spokeswoman Cpl. Tracey Duffy tells the News Journal of Wilmington (https://delonline.us/23klCa1 ) that 56-year-old Jeffery Blauvelt was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon upon being spotted driving another vehicle near Rehoboth Beach.
The arrest came after his wife reported him missing, saying she was concerned for his wellbeing.
On Tuesday, police say Blauvelt hadn’t been discharged from Christiana Hospital when he approached a car parked in front of the hospital, slid into the driver’s seat and drove off. The car was recovered later that evening.
Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale says authorities have charged Blauvelt with driving under the influence of drugs and will also charge him with carjacking, among other charges.
