WHITE RIVER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Advocates are nearly done with efforts to save 2 acres of beach and dunes from construction in Muskegon County.

The Muskegon Chronicle (https://bit.ly/1SRHYeb ) reports Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation Tuesday that allocates $300,000 to help with purchasing the 2 acres that has 200 feet of low-bluff shoreline on Lake Michigan.

Mike Cockerill, White River Township supervisor, said finalization of funding “is a big relief.” An expansion of the White River Barrier Dunes Sanctuary has long been planned by locals.

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan has raised about $700,000 to get to a sale price of roughly $970,000, which attorneys for the private owners and township negotiated previously.

Land Conservancy spokesman Colin Hoogerwerf expects the property will be closed on in the next two months.
