GREENLAND, N.H. (AP) - The federal Environmental Protection Agency is considering a local lawmaker’s request to test waters near a now-closed landfill in southeastern New Hampshire for PFC contamination.
The Portsmouth Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1XiEylN ) Rep. Thomas Sherman, a Rye Democrat, requested that the EPA tests waters around the Coakley Landfill in North Hampton and Greenland during a meeting concerning the Seacoast’s pediatric cancer cluster.
Many parents of children in the area who have been diagnosed with cancer believe an environmental factor may have triggered the rare pediatric diseases.
EPA representative Jim Murphy says the federal agency has internally discussed Sherman’s call for testing around Coakley, which is now a Superfund cleanup site.
The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry says PFC exposure can cause cancer, developmental delays and other health risks.
