HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Doctors in Hilo are notifying patients of possible inaccuracies in thousands of mammograms taken over the course of about a year.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1Sf6ylT ) that Hilo Women’s Imaging Center is notifying patients about possible problems with mammograms taken between June 30, 2014 and Aug. 24, 2015 on one of the center’s two machines. Doctors say about 12,000 mammograms were taken during that period.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has ordered the center to stop performing mammograms while it completes a re-certification process for its imaging equipment.
Officials with the center say since mammograms are an annual exam for women over the age of 40 about half of the affected patients have already been back for evaluations that were not affected by the imaging issues.
