FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A Fayetteville photographer’s picture will be one of the 16 featured postage stamps honoring the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service later this year.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/25NFlRH ) reports that U.S. Postal Service officials announced Wednesday that stamps featuring Tim Fitzharris’ image of wild horses at Assateague Island National Seashore will go on sale for 47 cents apiece on June 2 at the World Stamp Show in New York City.
The Postal Service plans to sell the stamps in all 32,000 post offices nationwide. Spokesman Mark Saunders says tens of millions of the stamps will be printed.
All 16 images are “Forever” stamps, so they’ll be able to be used on all future letters despite rate increase. A sheet with the entire series will cost $7.52.
Fitzharris’ photo was shot on a barrier island along the coast of Maryland and Virginia. It was the third stamp design to be unveiled this week, and the rest will be unveiled this month.
“The shot was taken at sunrise with a super telephoto lens mounted on a tripod,” Fitzharris wrote in an email to postal officials. “It was not too difficult, just a matter of being up early enough, finding the ponies, waiting for the light and taking numerous shots to capture the best look of the swishing tails.”
Fitzharris didn’t respond to the newspaper’s request for comment. But his colleague, Popular Photography Editor-in-Chief Miriam Leuchter, said that she was happy to hear about his success.
“He’s a superb photographer of the American landscape, and his work is a brilliant choice for a postage stamp,” she said via email.
