AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage has signed into law a bill aimed at protecting outdoor sport shooting ranges that are being affected by increased rural development in the state.
The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/22eYSpE ) the law prohibits local ordinances or lawsuits seeking to limit the operation of existing ranges or force them to close based on noise complaints or longstanding shooting activities. It also allows municipalities to regulate substantial changes in the use of the ranges.
Supporters of the bill, signed on Tuesday, say more than 100 ranges are threatened by increasing rural development.
The law doesn’t keep ranges from lawsuits based on negligence or recklessness in the operation or use of the range. Ranges must conform to “generally accepted gun safety and shooting range operation practices.”
