MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - A Collinsville man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for DUI manslaughter involving the death of a 14-year-old.
Media outlets report that 24-year-old Mitchell James Roberts was sentenced Wednesday in the death of Jamarcus Altman Jr. Roberts was first charged after he was involved in a head-on crash in 2013 on Highway 19 North that resulted in Altman’s death.
News outlets report Roberts was under the influence of Xanax at the time of the crash.
Judge Lester Williamson sentenced Roberts to 25 years in prison, with seven suspended. Roberts was also sentenced to five years’ probation and ordered to pay thousands of dollars’ worth of fines.
Roberts has two convictions for DUI and another pending. He was also convicted of house burglary.
Defense Attorney Stewart Parrish says he’s going to appeal the sentence.
