JERICHO, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a driver stepped out of his car after hitting the median on the Long Island Expressway and was fatally struck by two vehicles.

The accident just after 2 a.m. Thursday in Jericho shut down traffic on the eastbound LIE for several hours.

Nassau County police say the driver of a Toyota Camry struck the median and got out to tie up his bumper.

Police say the man was struck by a Ford SUV and a Nissan Altima. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

The driver of the SUV was taken into custody. Police say charges of driving while intoxicated are pending.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the Nissan.
