ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York state is launching a new program to help 10 cities and towns improve their downtowns.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH’-moh) formally launched the $100 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative on Thursday.

The state’s 10 Regional Economic Development Councils will each pick one city or town from their regions to receive $10 million from the program. The money will go to help local officials attract new businesses, housing or community services to downtown areas.

Cuomo pushed to include the initiative in the recently passed state budget. He says he hopes it helps local officials in the selected cities turn their downtowns into “vibrant” places to live, work and raise families.
