RENO, Nev. (AP) - Nevada has teamed up with NASA to conduct more research and testing on drones, which will take place at a new laboratory at Reno-Stead Airport.
Gov. Brian Sandoval, representatives of NASA and other officials unveiled the Nevada Unmanned Aircraft and NextGen Collaborative Environment Laboratory on Wednesday. The facility houses University of Nevada research on airspace management and allows access to NASA’s airspace simulation system. It also features a workshop for creating unmanned aerial systems.
Nevada acquired a contract with NASA for the lab last year. The agreement came after the Federal Aviation Administration selected the state as one of six locations for commercial drone research in 2013.
Testing at the facility will include observing drones in different weather conditions and interacting with manned aircraft.
