MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) - A western Michigan amusement park will be allowed to increase how much sewage it treats and releases into groundwater under a new permit.

The Muskegon Chronicle (https://bit.ly/1qvjTR6 ) reported Wednesday that the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality had issued the permit regarding Michigan’s Adventure. It takes effect May 1. The new permit was revised to include weekly monitoring, in response to a public hearing held last year.

The new permit allows for discharging up to 100,000 gallons a day of sanitary sewage wastewater, which is 10 times the current permit’s daily limit. Under the new permit, the park can discharge a maximum of 5 million gallons yearly.

Opponents are concerned wastewater discharge could negatively affect a watershed, and saw the permit request as a chance to make the park connect to the county sewer system.
