WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Investigators are trying to figure out why a Raleigh woman was walking on a rural section of Interstate 40 when she was struck and killed.

Local media outlets report that 52-year-old Ann Gillum was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident in New Hanover County about 5:30 on Wednesday morning.

Trooper K.B. Parker of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol says Gillum was walking in the right lane when she was struck by a motorist from Virginia.

Investigators are trying to determine why she was walking on the interstate. There are no homes or businesses in the area.
