SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - Sault Ste. Marie is selling a more than century-old golf course for less than half of the appraised market value.

The Evening News of Sault Ste. Marie reports (https://bit.ly/1RFYlLD ) the city’s best offer was $450,000 from Benoit Properties International for the course originally valued at about $1.25 million.

The newspaper report that debts, past-due loans and other expenditures took a heavy toll, with the city looking to retain $22,000 from the sale.

City Commissioner Brent Osterhout says officials “made the best of a bad situation.”

Deed restrictions will ensure that the property reverts back to the city if it is no longer operated as an 18-hole golf course.
