COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Architectural historian John Bryan is speaking about the design and construction of the 175-year-old South Caroliniana Library.
Bryan’s presentation is 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ernest Hollings Special Collections Library Room in the Thomas Cooper Library on the University of South Carolina Columbia campus.
Bryan is discussing recently discovered information about the design and construction of the South Carolina College library, including proposals by American architect Robert Mills.
Mills was born in Charleston and is best known for designing the Washington Monument.
He designed the library building in 1838, modeling the reading room after plans for the original Library of Congress. It was completed in 1840 and marked the first use of a free-standing academic library building in the United States.
