BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts State Police detectives are investigating after an 18-year-old freshman at Bridgewater State University was found dead in his dorm room by university police.

District Attorney Timothy Cruz says the student was found unresponsive Thursday afternoon in Durgin Hall on the university’s southeastern Massachusetts campus.

Officials say university police received a call from one of the student’s friends requesting a “well-being check” on the Sharon man around 12:30 p.m.

The student was found unresponsive in his room and was transported to Brockton Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.

Cruz said the circumstances surrounding the death are not believed to be suspicious.

A statement from university President Frederick Clark says counselors have been made available to students and faculty.
