NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A driver survived with what police said were only minor injuries after his car plunged an estimated 200 feet off a New Orleans bridge and landed on the street below.

Police say it happened about 12:40 p.m. Friday.

Dawne Massey, a spokeswoman for the police department, says an initial investigation shows a man driving a Chevrolet Aveo westbound over New Orleans’ Woodland Bridge tried to pass vehicles in front of him but lost control and went over the side.

Massey says the driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

No other vehicles were involved.
