UTICA, N.Y. (AP) - An iconic sign over a central New York brewery is getting a makeover after more than 75 years as a local landmark.
The F.X. Matt Brewing Co. in Utica announced Thursday that the old sign over the brewery will be taken down on Tuesday. The sign reads Utica Club Pilsner on one side and Utica Club Ale on the other.
A new electric sign, scheduled to be erected in June, will read Utica Club in 12-foot-tall letters in the beer brand’s distinctive red script.
The original electric sign was erected in 1914. It was replaced 25 years later by the current sign, which hasn’t been lit up in years.
Company officials had been trying to get the sign back in working order, but it was determined it needed to be replaced because of safety and wiring concerns.
