PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix City Manager’s Office has narrowed its search for a new police chief to 10 semifinalists.

The list includes two internal candidates - Executive Assistant Chief Dave Harvey and Assistant Chief Mike Kurtenbach.

Another candidate is former Phoenix assistant chief Jeri Williams, who currently is police chief in Oxnard, California.

Two other candidates are police chiefs on Arizona reservations - Patrick Melvin of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and Kathleen Elliott of the Gila River Indian Community.

The other five candidates are from Florida, Texas, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

Phoenix is trying to fill the position before Chief Joseph Yahner retires in October.

He was appointed in February 2015 after Daniel Garcia was fired.

Yahner is a 30-year veteran who has twice been interim Phoenix police chief.
