CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - The Washington Street bridge in Cumberland will be closed indefinitely based on results from an engineering inspection.

The Cumberland Times-News reports (https://bit.ly/22hNFob) the city issued a statement Thursday saying the closure would come before the “end of the business day Friday.”

City Engineer John DiFonzo says deterioration and structural issues caused the bridge’s closure. The bridge was forced to be reduced to one lane in August 2012 also because of deterioration.

City Administrator Jeff Rhodes says the bridge was inspected Tuesday, and the city was notified about the problem the next day.

The company that owns the bridge, CSX Transportation, has been made aware of the situation.

The statement says the bridge will remain open to pedestrians. Motorists are asked to use Allegany, Greene and Lee streets as a detour.
