DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (AP) - The Denham Springs City Council has voted to fire the city’s police chief for his handling of a domestic incident involving a city councilman.

Media outlets report the council voted Thursday in a special meeting to fire Police Chief Paul “Scott” Jones, effective immediately.

Mayor Gerard Landry had placed Jones and police Capt. Steve Kistler on paid leave in February, pending an investigation into a January altercation involving Councilman Chris Davis and his wife.

Prosecutor Scott Perrilloux said officers issued an arrest warrant for Davis but didn’t execute it. Instead, Davis was given a summons to appear in court.

Prosecutors later issued a warrant for Davis’ arrest. He surrendered in February.

Landry says the department handled Davis’ case differently than it had other similar cases.

Jones didn’t comment on the decision.
