PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A jury is deliberating whether a 36-year-old Philadelphia police officer hurled racial epithets, displayed his gun and threatened to shoot a man during an off-duty traffic mishap more than two years ago.
Philly.com (https://bit.ly/1VDCUfK ) reports the jury deliberated for three hours Thursday and was returning Friday to debate the fate of Officer Edward Sawicki III. The 36-year-old, nine-year veteran officer is charged with terroristic threats, simple assault and possession of an instrument of crime.
Sawicki and the alleged victim. Lamar Fouse, gave vastly different versions of the October 2013 incident. It began when Sawicki backed into Fouse’s knee, who then banged his hand on Sawicki’s car.
Fouse contends Sawicki used racial slurs and said, “I’ll smoke you.” The officer denies using slurs and says Fouse was out of control.
