FLOWOOD, Miss. (AP) - A man accused of poisoning animals found dead near a Flowood apartment complex has been arrested.

Media outlets report Flowood police say John Colter Pyron of Hazlehurst was arrested Wednesday. He’s charged with animal cruelty, possession of schedule III controlled substance and suspicion of poisoning animals.

The investigation began after residents complained that family pets were being found dead near the apartment complex for no reason.

Police say a search warrant of Pyron’s apartment revealed various items of evidence used in the crime.

Authorities say at least four cats and several wild animals were poisoned when they ate from a can of tuna that contained a foreign substance. Officials are working to determine what the substance was.

It’s unclear whether Pyron has an attorney.
