MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Two students from Montpelier and Fletcher have won Vermont’s annual student poster design and essay writing contests for this year’s Green Up Day.

Charlotte Brace, an 11th grader from Montpelier, was the overall winner in the poster contest for her design featuring a red covered bridge, with a black bear and Green Mountains in the background.

For the writing part, 6th-grader Sirena Sawyer from the Fletcher Elementary School won the top prize for her essay emphasizing the importance of taking care of Vermont. Both students received $250 for their winning entries.

Vermont’s annual Green Up Day takes place the first Saturday in May in which volunteers around the state pick up trash and litter along roadsides, in public spaces, on the landscape and in waterways.
