LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) - A New York-based history organization is kicking off a monthlong series of lectures focusing on Colonial American wars fought in the upstate region.

The French and Indian War Society’s first of four lectures is set for Friday night at the Fort William Henry Conference Center in the village of Lake George.

The opening lecture by maritime archaeologist Joseph Zarzynski (zar-ZIHN’-skee) tells the story of the dozens of artillery pieces at Fort William Henry, the recreated French and Indian War fort that has been a tourist attraction in Lake George since the mid-1950s.

A research project led by Zarzynski determined some of the fort’s guns were originally aboard a British warship that sank in the Florida Keys in 1744.

Lectures set for the next three Friday nights will focus on archaeology, the region’s forts and Lake George Battlefield Park.
