WOBURN, Mass. (AP) - Middlesex County officials are reporting a dangerous spike in drug overdoses.
State police from the Middlesex District Attorney’s office have responded to at least 33 fatal overdoses since March 1, and a total of 65 since the beginning of the year. Heroin has been responsible for 45 of the fatal overdoses.
On Friday, District Attorney Marian Ryan and Mike Duggan, founder of the group Wicked Sober, issued a “call for action” in response to the surge in overdoses.
Wicked Sober says it will add extra staff over the coming weekend and work with other community-based organizations that provide resources to people dealing with addiction.
Officials also report that the overdose reversal drug Narcan has been administered at least 244 times in the past month by EMS providers in the county.
