MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents has signed off on UW-Madison’s new tenure policy.

Republican legislators stripped tenure protections out of Wisconsin law last year. The regents last month adopted a new policy that allows schools to lay off tenured faculty in financial emergencies and for educational consideration and requires performance evaluations. The policy allows each school to adopt its own protocols that align with the umbrella rules.

UW-Madison’s policy ensures laid off or fired faculty get up to a year’s severance and requires the chancellor to consider other budget reduction options short of lay-offs or terminations.

The regents approved the policy unanimously without discussion during a meeting Friday at UW-Green Bay.
