CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston County lawmakers suggest that tolls could be one way to pay for finishing Interstate 526 through Charleston’s western suburbs.
Local media outlets report that county council passed a resolution Thursday also suggesting money from a sales tax referendum or other state and federal funding could be used. The resolution did not include specific dollar amounts.
It was passed in response to an ultimatum from the board of the state Transportation Infrastructure Bank calling on the county to submit a plan to cover a shortfall estimated to be as much as $350 million for the project.
The county risked losing $420 million already set aside for the project if it didn’t respond. The cost of completing the interstate is now estimated at more than $700 million.
