CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - The Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service has checked on sows and cubs in eight bear dens and has found no evidence of bear deaths.
Black bear project leader Harry Spiker tells the Cumberland Times-News (https://bit.ly/25PkLAf) that before the den visits a few weeks ago, he was concerned that the heavy snows of late January that melted quickly might seep into dens and drown cubs.
However, Spiker says “everything looked good.” Seven of the sows had 19 cubs among them. One sow had no cubs.
Spiker says the average of cubs this year is 2.7 cubs per sow, which is down from the long term count of 3.0.
In the area of the Wisp Resort, workers found a sow with two cubs beneath the porch of a vacation home. They were moved to a forested location.
